NHS Orkney

Allied Health Professions - Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy in Orkney is a jointly managed service, located at the Balfour Hospital and also in the Paterson Building, Kirkwall where the Community Social Services’ Occupational Therapists are based.

Being one department, a seamless service for patients between hospital and community is thus provided. The Occupational Therapy Department at the Balfour Hospital has three Occupational Therapists for Adult Services and three Occupational Therapy Helpers.

They treat patients who are in-patients or who attend the St Magnus Day Hospital.

Occupational Therapists treat people who are temporarily or permanently disabled. They enable them to be as independent as possible in their everyday lives while recovering from illness or adapting to disability, by working out ways of overcoming or coping with their difficulties.

The telephone numbers are (01856) 888118 / 888135

The Paediatric Occupational Therapist, the Paediatric Physiotherapist and Paediatric Physiotherapy Assistant are based in the Peedie Sea area of Glaitness School. They assess, treat and review children in their homes, at school, in respite accommodation or in hospital. This involves liaising with colleagues in Education and Social Services, especially when providing input on equipment issues and therapy input to the children.

The telephone numbers are (01856) 885590 / 885592 / 885593
