Anyone without a dentist requiring urgent care, should call the Public Dental Service at The Balfour or Garson Surgery.
Please note: There are no practices in Orkney currently taking on new routine NHS patients for dental care.

Public Dental Service – Reminder to attend appointments
The Public Dental Service is appealing to everyone to attend their dental appointments to help us make the best use of our time. We know that, on occasion, we have to cancel your appointment, but when patients fail to come for an appointment, clinical time is lost. We continue to try and recruit dentists but remain short-staffed, so every appointment is precious.
In October and November 2025 alone there was over 3 weeks of clinical time lost across Garson and The Balfour due to missed appointments, that’s 202 appointments over this time.
We’d really appreciate if you could make attending your dental appointments one of your New Years resolutions and help us to cut the number of failed appointments. If you do need to postpone or cancel your appointment, please call to let us know as soon as you can, this way we can utilise this slot for someone else who needs it. In addition, please give yourself plenty of time to get to your appointment and if you are running late please call the clinic. Unfortunately, when patients are more than 10 minutes late we may need to re-book your appointment. With your help we can ensure our time is used fully and appropriately and we can see as many of you as possible.

Practice Information: NHSO Public Dental Services – The Balfour Dental provides general dental services for those with increased need (special care dentistry) or urgent treatment who are otherwise unable to access an NHS dentist. More complex care in Oral Surgery is carried out on-site and the unit hosts specialist services provided by visiting consultants (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics and Restorative dentistry). The department is located on the ground floor of The Balfour with wheelchair access and bariatric provision. Opening hours are: Monday to Thursday: 8am – 12.30pm and 1pm – 6pm, Friday: 8am – 12.30pm and 1pm – 5.30pm.
