Near Me Appointments

Since early 2025, NHS Orkney and NHS Grampian have been working together to enable more Orkney residents to see consultants in Aberdeen via Near Me, rather than travelling for in-person appointments. Near Me is a secure video consulting service that enables people to attend appointments from wherever is convenient to them. All you need is a device for making video calls like a smartphone, tablet or computer and an internet connection.

John Daniels, Head of Primary Care at Orkney Health and Care said: “We have listened to the views and opinions of our community and heard that too many times patients are being flown to Aberdeen for what could have been a phone call, now we are introducing just that. By having all appointments scheduled by NHS Grampian to be Near Me by default, we will reduce the barriers of travel and hopefully improve the patient experience. Of course, there may be times when technology isn’t playing ball but none more than the times when the weather doesn’t align to let us attend appointments.”

While the process to introduce all NHS Grampian appointments to Near Me may take some time, we’d like to remind everyone that when you are appointed by NHS Grampian, you can always call the department on the letter and ask whether your appointment can be via Near Me instead. There will still be occasions when clinicians need to see someone face-to-face, for example when specific scans or tests are required.

If you are concerned about your internet connection or you aren’t able to access a device suitable for making video calls, there are options available in the community. Both Kirkwall and Stromness Libraries are able to facilitate Near Me appointments and you can find out more here, Orkney Library & Archive. Additionally, you can contact us at The Balfour via Central Reception on 01856 888100 and we’re also able to facilitate appointments, providing all the necessary equipment and a quiet room.
