Today we announce and congratulate the 106 individuals/teams who have been nominated for our 2024 Team Orkney Awards.

Each nomination tells a unique story of our dedicated teams and staff, and it makes us enormously proud to hear of the many ways that colleagues have gone that extra mile to deliver exceptional care to our patients, kept our services running, and worked hard to improve our services.

We are delighted to be working in partnership with The Orcadian for our staff awards – which have been reintroduced in direct response to staff feedback.

The categories for our 2024 awards are as follows:

  • Clinical Team of the Year
  • Non-Clinical Team of the Year
  • Outstanding Care
  • Leader of the Year
  • Learner of the Year
  • Special Recognition
  • Innovation
  • Values
  • People’s Choice Award (this category was open to votes from our public and local community)

Laura Skaife-Knight, NHS Orkney CEO, said: “An extra special congratulations to everyone who has been nominated for a Team Orkney Award. To be recognised by your colleagues and patients is a remarkable achievement and one every nominee should be proud of. I am so pleased we have introduced our new staff awards in response to staff feedback, recognising how much these awards mean to people. It also demonstrates that we are listening to and acting on feedback from Team Orkney, in this case that we must do more to celebrate and recognise our amazing staff for the outstanding work they do throughout the year. Thank you to The Orcadian for working in partnership with us, including with the People’s Choice Award, evidencing the strengthened relationships we are developing with our community and local media too.”

Meghan McEwen, Chair of NHS Orkney, said: “I am delighted with the number and quality of nominations for the Team Orkney Awards. Time and time again I have heard incredible stories about outstanding care provided to our community, and it is a welcome opportunity to celebrate and highlight this excellent work. I would like to congratulate each nominee who has done so much for our community, for their colleagues, and our patients. You are all a credit to yourselves and also to NHS Orkney, and I am so pleased to be able to recognise your achievements through these awards. Thank you as well to everyone who nominated through the People’s Choice Award, this has been a huge success and shown just what a difference our teams make to this community.”

Leah Seator, Editor at The Orcadian, said: “The Orcadian is thrilled to see such a fantastic response to the Team Orkney awards. Many of the true heroes of our community work in health, and often go above and beyond their role to make a difference. We are absolutely delighted to be involved, and offer our heartfelt congratulations to all who have been nominated. We look forward to celebrating in March, at an event which will shine a well-earned spotlight on NHS Orkney’s brilliant staff on the ground.”

The next stage of the process will be the shortlisting – with the shortlist to be announced at the end of February. Our shortlisting panels are made up of staff from across NHS Orkney, patients, and external partners. The winners will be announced at a special event which will take place on Friday 22 March 2024.

Our awards are possible thanks to the support from our sponsors and the Orkney Health Board Endowment Funds – a registered Scottish charity.
