Real Life Sory: Melissa Lindsay – Integrated Midwife and Obstetric Sonographer
After working at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Melissa Lindsay made the move to Orkney with her family, trading city life for island living. With four young children in tow, she initially stepped away from midwifery to work in a local school. But her passion for maternity care never left her, and when the time was right, she completed a Return to Practice course with Robert Gordon University and joined NHS Orkney as an Integrated Midwife.
Melissa didn’t relocate for the job, she relocated for the lifestyle. And it’s a decision she’s never looked back on.
“Working as a midwife in a small community means you get to really know the people you care for. Unlike in larger hospitals, we follow families through pregnancy, birth and into the postnatal period, forming real connections.”
Melissa’s career has flourished since joining NHS Orkney. She’s completed sonography training, taken on the role of Bereavement Midwife, and continues to grow professionally within a supportive and close-knit team.
“We’re all given opportunities to expand our roles and supported in further training to become more specialised in our areas of interest.”
One of her proudest moments? Receiving an award at the Scottish Health Awards 2024 – a testament to her dedication and impact.
And when the shift ends?
“Orkney’s landscape and scenery is ever-changing, and a walk along the beach after a busy shift is priceless!”
