After graduating, Kendall wanted a role that connected with her learning. Nearly 20 years later, Kendall has built a career that spans recruitment, HR and organisational development.
“My career began as a Recruitment Officer before moving into a Senior HR Officer role. That experience gave me valuable insight into the employee journey and highlighted areas where development and improvement could make a real difference. It shaped my move into Organisational Development and Improvement – a role that allows me to work creatively to support employees and teams.”
For Kendall, living and working in Orkney is about connection: “Orkney offers a strong sense of community where people genuinely look out for each other. You can’t beat the scenery, and the weather! Four seasons in one day isn’t just a saying here, it’s a way of life. Working here means contributing to something that matters locally, and that’s incredibly motivating.”
Kendall feels a deep sense of loyalty to NHS Orkney: “I’ve seen the organisation evolve through many changes. Every day brings new opportunities to think differently, improve, and support others. My passion lies in helping staff feel valued and supported so work isn’t just a place they go, but a place they want to be.”
There have been many proud moments, but a few stand out: introducing the first apprenticeships to NHS Orkney, mentoring graduate apprentices, launching the Behaviour Framework to embed values, and being part of the team that coordinated the move to the new hospital, from engaging with the public to talk about design, to delivering public and staff tours before opening.
