King’s birthday recognition for long-serving Orkney nurse

Moira Sinclair has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for her unwavering commitment to patient care across an impressive 40+ year career with NHS Orkney. Moira is the Clinical Nurse Manager for Acute Services at NHS Orkney however, likely, most well known for her role as Senior Charge Nurse for the Emergency Department.

Moira started her career in Orkney, some 40+ years ago, completing her nursing training before starting in The Balfour. Moira had an early interest and introduction into the NHS as she was brought up at Eastbank Hospital where her father was an ambulance driver. Moira has undertaken a number of significant roles across NHS Orkney, making a considerable difference in each when it comes to further improving patient care, services and leadership standards. Moira role models compassionate and visible leadership, championing the delivery of safe and compassionate care for patients.

Moira is now due to retire in summer of this year from her role as Clinical Nurse Manager, she will leave a lasting legacy across NHS Orkney, which centres around being an advocate for patients and always ensuring the patient voice is heard.

Moira said: “I was not expecting this award at all, it came as a total shock. I am very humbled to have received this award. During my 41 years working for NHS Orkney I have worked with incredible and wonderful people. I have loved my nursing career working with patients and their families and watching staff and services develop. This is a lovely way to celebrate my career.”

I am delighted that Moira has been recognised for her long service and unwavering dedication to NHS Orkney and Nursing over the last 41 years. Moira is held in high esteem by many colleagues for her compassionate care delivery. She is an advocate for both staff and patient wellbeing, proactively bringing teams with her and enhancing every patients’ experience.”

Moira is an incredible person, leader and nurse who so many people look up to for the very significant, positive and lasting impact she has had on the lives of so many in our community. There is no-one more deserving than Moira to be recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours. This is a fitting moment for Moira to receive this award in the year she is retiring from NHS Orkney and the NHS after an incredible four decades of service. Very many congratulations Moira – we are so proud of you as I know our community will be.”

The investiture ceremony will take place later this year and we hope Moira and her family have a fantastic time at the event.
