Sustainability Success

Earlier this month NHS Orkney was awarded The Sustainability Award at the Scottish Public Service Awards 2025 for leading the way in reducing emissions and improving the NHS’s effect on the environment.

A few of the projects which we have completed include:

  • Installing renewable heating across all of our health care buildings
  • Decarbonisation of all our sites across Orkney
  • Creating and running a clinical waste treatment unit here in Orkney to help reduce transport emissions and boost our resilience
  • Introducing our well-loved polytunnel area which is regularly visited by staff, patients and the community

Sharon Keyes, Head of Facilities and NPD Contract at NHS Orkney, said: “I’m absolutely delighted that NHS Orkney has been recognised with this prestigious Sustainability Award. This achievement reflects the hard work, creativity, and dedication of our teams and our shared commitment to a greener future. It proves that even in a remote island setting, we can lead the way in innovation and environmental responsibility. I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve accomplished together.”

Louise Wilson, Director of Public Health and Executive Lead for Sustainability at NHS Orkney said: “The breadth of work showcased is a real testament to the innovation of teams in NHS Orkney, and it is wonderful that all the hard work has been recognised by the Sustainability Award.”

We are thankful to those who recognised our hard work and put us forward for this nomination, thank you.
