Looking after our community and providing excellent care

Orkney Macmillan Specialist Nurse, Anne Gregg, awarded MBE for delivering outstanding patient care over three decades

An Orkney Macmillan Specialist Nurse has been awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for her outstanding service to Nursing and the Macmillan Unit and for delivering exceptional care to our community over three decades.

Anne Gregg has worked for NHS Orkney since 1993 and joined the Macmillan team in 1999. She has and continues to work tirelessly to provide the very best of care for her patients both in hospital and across the entire community. Anne is highly respected at NHS Orkney and in our community for her work leading the Macmillan team and the MBE has been given to Anne in recognition of her hard work for our community over the last 31 years and for the positive difference she has made to the lives of so many.

Anne Gregg said: “I feel very flattered to have been nominated for recognition on the King's Birthday Honours List and am extremely overwhelmed to have been awarded an MBE. I am incredibly fortunate that NHS Orkney has invested in me and allowed me to progress my career in the field which I feel very passionate about. I feel privileged to do the job I do and could not do it without the immense support I get from my team and managers. The people I meet whilst doing my day-to-day job are the people who inspire me to do what I do.”

Sam Thomas, Executive Director of Nursing, Midwifery, AHPs and Chief Officer Acute, said: “There is no one who deserves this award more than Anne. Anne continually gives her all, and more, to her patients and team and is a credit to NHS Orkney. I am exceptionally proud to work with Anne and witness her dedication to excellence in patient care. Anne is loved by all who know her and this is simply testament to her caring, empathetic nature. Congratulations Anne.”

Laura Skaife-Knight, Chief Executive, said: “I am so incredibly proud of Anne and having got to know her well over the last year I can honestly say there is no-one more deserving of this national recognition and honour. Anne puts patients and their families first, always, constantly strives to deliver the best patient care and is a true pleasure to work with and alongside. Enjoy this special moment, Anne and on behalf of the Board – very many congratulations and please know how proud we are of you on this very significant achievement, as I know the rest of Orkney will be.”

The investiture ceremony will take place later in the summer and we hope Anne and her family have a memorable time at the event where she will receive this prestigious award.

It’s been quite a year for Anne. Earlier this year, she won the Special Recognition Award at the Team Orkney (staff) Awards for her unwavering commitment to NHS Orkney and for continuously striving to enhance the wellbeing of both patients and colleagues. She was also nominated in the People’s Choice Awards category – which is further evidence of her outstanding contributions, how highly thought of Anne is in our community and her dedication and commitment to looking after our community and providing excellent patient care, consistent with our promise (vision) to our community in our recently-launched Corporate Strategy.
