NHS Orkney is a Disability Confident Leader (Level 3). This reflects our commitment to fair, inclusive, and accessible recruitment and employment practices, and to creating a workplace where disabled people and those with long‑term physical or mental health conditions are supported to thrive and succeed.
Our Disability Confident Leader status has been independently validated and confirms that we are applying inclusive practice across recruitment and for our colleagues.
Inclusive recruitment
At NHS Orkney, we are committed to ensuring our recruitment processes are fair, transparent, and accessible to all applicants. We actively encourage applications from disabled people and clearly promote our Disability Confident commitment within our recruitment materials and candidate guidance.
Candidates are invited to tell us about any reasonable adjustments they may need during the recruitment process, including at application, shortlisting, or interview stage. We work with candidates and hiring managers to ensure these adjustments are considered and put in place wherever required.
In line with the Disability Confident scheme and our Recruitment and Selection Policy, candidates who declare a disability and meet the essential criteria for a role will be offered an interview under the Guaranteed Interview commitment. This helps ensure that selection decisions are based on skills, values, and suitability for the role.
Support at work
Our commitment to inclusion continues beyond recruitment. NHS Orkney supports disabled staff throughout their employment by embedding reasonable adjustments into policy and everyday practice, and by promoting open, supportive conversations about health, wellbeing, and workplace needs.
This approach aligns with our wider commitment to dignity, respect, kindness, and creating a safe and supportive working environment.
Leading and improving practice
As a Disability Confident Leader, NHS Orkney takes an active role in promoting disability inclusion and continuous improvement. Our status demonstrates that we are meeting the requirements of the scheme and contributing to wider good practice.
