Real Life Story: Karen Spence – Public Health Administration Manager
Karen’s journey with NHS Orkney began in 2010, inspired by a strong family connection to nursing, both parents and two sisters in the profession, and by the organisation’s reputation as one of the largest and most respected employers in Orkney.
“I’ve always been a home bird,” Karen says. “Growing up in Orkney was an enriching experience. It’s a safe, beautiful place with a strong sense of community, a wonderful environment to raise a family.”
Karen started as a Switchboard Operator before moving into Medical Records on secondment, where she developed key administrative skills. From there, she became a Team Secretary, then Personal Assistant to the Directors of Finance and Public Health. “Although I had no prior experience in Public Health, that role gave me valuable insight into the service and its impact on the people of Orkney.”
When the opportunity arose to join the Public Health team permanently, Karen seized it. Over the years, she progressed to Public Health Administrator and then Public Health Administration Manager in 2018. That same year, she began a Graduate Apprenticeship in Business Management, graduating in 2022 – an achievement made even more meaningful by completing it during the pandemic.
Karen’s proudest moments include supporting Public Health during COVID-19: “It was an exceptionally demanding time. I redesigned processes, improved reporting systems, and liaised with national bodies to ensure accuracy and efficiency. I also helped introduce wellbeing initiatives for the team, which really mattered during remote working.”
She’s also led the local implementation of a national project to modernise child health data system, a significant leadership role that will improve services for families across Orkney.
“For me, working for NHS Orkney means being part of something bigger, an organisation that cares deeply about the health and wellbeing of our community. Public Health may not always be visible, but its impact is huge, and I’m proud to play a part in that.”
