Dr Stevenson joined the NHS Orkney board in December 2023 as the Orkney Islands Council (OIC) representative. She has a broad clinical background as a registered nurse in medical/surgical wards, cardiovascular intensive care, care of the elderly, and as a midwife in labour ward. Subsequently, she worked in nurse education. A move to Sweden in 1990 led to a career change – teaching English language and medical English.
Her more recent career has strong links to healthcare, carrying out research in health-related information technology with a focus on patient safety. Her PhD thesis from the University of Sheffield is entitled “Documentation of Vital Signs in Electronic Health Records: A Patient Safety Issue”. She has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and has presented her research at various international conferences. In addition, she taught on a Master’s programme in eHealth.
Dr Stevenson returned to her native Orkney in 2020 and became an elected member of OIC in May 2022. She is a voting member of the Integration Joint Board (IJB). She also sits on the following committees: Education, Communities and Housing, Planning/Local Review Board and Policy and Resources.
Meeting up with family from Orkney, Aberdeen and Sweden, catching up with friends, and wild swimming, are central to Jean’s free time.
