Looking after our community and providing excellent care

Be part of our history opportunity - History wall in The Balfour 75 years celebration of the NHS - March 2023

This summer sees the National Health Service celebrate 75 years in service!

As part of the NHS75 celebrations, NHS Orkney set out creating a history wall within The Balfour, using NHS history, artefacts and the incredible talent that exists within Orkney’s creative community. Local artist, India Whitwell of the Orkney Art Club is leading this project and has exciting plans afoot.

India and the Orkney Art Club are inviting you to come along to creative workshops across Orkney to help be part of the history wall. The aim is to enhance the hospital and healthcare facility further by creating a display for staff, patients and visitors that celebrates NHS Orkney’s unique role within our community.

The workshops will involve exploring stories behind NHS Orkney’s historic collections, as well as your own stories of health and care across the county. We would like to hear your stories and learn how you have been affected by healthcare in Orkney. If you have any photographs or objects, we would love to see those as well, this is a piece of artwork that will be shaped by the people and stories of Orkney.

India Whitwell, Artist, said We want the artwork to be created by the community for the community, so we are hoping you will take up the opportunity to come along to one of the creative workshops.

Meghan McEwen, NHS Orkney Chair, said “We are delighted to work with India and the Orkney Art Club as they create this piece of art with people across Orkney to celebrate 75 years of the NHS.”

The dates and times of the sessions taking place are below.
